Right hemisphere structures predict poststroke speech fluency.

OBJECTIVE We sought to determine via a cross-sectional study the contribution of (1) the right hemisphere's speech-relevant white matter regions and (2) interhemispheric connectivity to speech fluency in the chronic phase of left hemisphere stroke with aphasia. METHODS Fractional anisotropy (FA) of white matter regions underlying the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG), precentral gyrus (PreCG)...

Language and speech capacity of the right hemisphere.

-Right hemisphere language and speech capacity was further analyzed in brainbisected patients. The results indicate that little or no syntactic capability exists in the fight hemisphere. The only semantic dimension that was comprehended in a series of pictorialverbal matching tests was the affirmative-negative. Moreover, earlier indications of a right hemisphere speech capacity could not be con...

Right Hemisphere Remapping of Naming Functions Depends on Lesion Size and Location in Poststroke Aphasia

The study of language network plasticity following left hemisphere stroke is foundational to the understanding of aphasia recovery and neural plasticity in general. Damage in different language nodes may influence whether local plasticity is possible and whether right hemisphere recruitment is beneficial. However, the relationships of both lesion size and location to patterns of remapping are p...

[The neutral and affective verbal fluency in people with right, left or both hemisphere brain pathology].

AIM The comparison of neutral and affective fluency realisation in patients with right, left or both hemisphere brain damage and the control group, was the aim of our study. 31 healthy persona and 31 persons with vascular brain damage participated. (the left hemisphere (N = 11), right (N = 14) or both hemispheres (N = 6)). METHOD 4 fluency tasks were used: animals, "k" letter (the neutral tas...

Hypergraphia: a right hemisphere syndrome.

A new right hemisphere symptom is reported. Five stroke patients with lesions in the perisylvian cortico-subcortical or thalamic region of the right hemisphere produced linguistically correct but semantically loose writing. The behaviour was initiated by subtle prompting and continued semiautomatically. A possible mechanism underlying this hypergraphia is discussed.
